a sage of giant stature who was the son of Bhŗgu (Kū. Pur.); the father of Sārasvata by the river goddess Sarasvatī (Vm. Pur.); who selflessly volunteered to give up his life for the benefit of the world so that his bones, which were indestructible, could be used to make a weapon (the thunderbolt of Indra) for killing Vŗtrāsura (M. Bh.).
