Sthula literally means "gross".

In common usage sthula means

      a. Vaguely or broadly 
      b. Big or heavy - for example sthula kaya means fat body 
      c. Physical or gross 

In metaphysics, out of the three levels of existence sthula refers to the gross, the other two being sukshma (subtle) and karana (causal).
