purvapakṣa (‘the prima facie view’)
In philosophical disputations, when a scholar states his position, other scholars may raise objections against it. These
objections are generally indicated by the word ‘purvapakṣa’.
In the Mīmāmsā and the Vedānta systems it is the third stage while deciding the correct meaning of a statement in the Vedas.
