putrikā (‘daughter treated like a son’)
When a person has only one putrī or daughter and no sons, he can ceremonially adopt her as a son. Then she is called ‘putrikā’.
Alternatively, she can be given in marriage to a suitable bridegroom under the condition that her son will be adopted by him (the father of the girl) as his own son. In this case, the boy may be called ‘putrikāputra’. However, this latter word may also mean putrikā herself.
Such a daughter is entitled to perform all the obsequial rites of her parents, just like a son.
