sāmānya (‘that which is the same,’ ‘generality’)

This is one of the seven padārthas or categories recognised by the Vaiśeṣika-

darśana. See vaiśesika-darśana for details.

In the Alaṅkāraśāstra (the science of figure of speech), sāmānya refers to such an element which exists both in the basic object and the object with which it is compared, without any distinction.
