Vitaṇḍā literally means ‘cavil’.
This is one of the kinds of debate mentioned in the Nyāyasutras[1] of Gotama or Gautama.[2] Here, the opponent does not try to establish his own position but goes on refuting that of the exponent. For all the practical purposes it is destructive criticism. It is something like abusing the plaintiffs lawyer when one has no case at all.
