Vedic sacrifices[1] were very common during the ancient days. They are mentioned not only in the Vedic and allied literature but also in the epics and the purāṇas.
Somayāga is an important variety of such yāgas. Before Somayāga ritual starts, the Dīkṣaṇīyā, a minor rite of the iṣti type has to be performed. Its main part consists of the offering of puroḍāśa on eleven kapālas (pot-sherds) to Agni and Viṣṇu.
