From Hindupedia, the Hindu Encyclopedia

Humans behave in 1 of 3 qualities with every action they take - sattva (goodness or virtue), rajas (passion), and tamas (wickedness or vice.)

When a human acts with good karma (sattva), it produces punyā (virtue or merit.) When they act in bad karma (tamas), it produces pāp (vice or sin.)

The state of Moksh is beyond all three gunas, and so the sadhak (spiritual person) hopes to have eliminated all karmas (‘tapas’.) While a ascetic (person practicing gyana marga) relies on tapas, the bhakti yogi relies on worship.
