Praśvāsa literally means ‘exhalation’.

The words śvāsa and praśvāsa have been used by Patañjali[1] in his Yogasutras[2] in connection with the definition of prāṇāyāma. Śvāsa is inhalation and praśvāsa is exhalation. They are also called puraka and recaka. When their movement is stopped temporarily it results in prāṇāyāma.
