Ekāyana literally means ‘single or only support’.
The Upaniṣads use this word in the following two senses:
- In the Chāndogya Upaniṣad[1], it has a technical usage which means ‘the science of ethics’
- In the Bṛhadāranyaka Upaniṣad[2] it implies 'the only support'
By tracing the origin of all objects to their immediate causes, the Upaniṣad concludes that Brahman is the ultimate cause and support, ekāyana, of the whole world.
