Uttarā was the daughter of the king Virāṭa, the ruler of Matsyadeśa. She was taught the arts of music and dancing by Bṛhannalā. She later married to Abhimanyu, the son of Subhadrā and Arjuna. When Abhimanyu was killed in the Kurukṣetra war she was pregnant, carrying the future king Parīkṣit. Though Parīkṣit was killed by Aśvatthāma, Kṛṣṇa by his divine powers revived him.
