an anglicised mispronunciation of “Verul”, an archaeological heritage site near the present city of Aurangabad in the state of Maharashtra, renowned for its monumental rock-cut cave temples and monasteries, numbering 34, built by the rulers of the Rāşţrakuta dynasty, and constructed in several phases between the 5th and 10th centuries CE, consisting of 17 Hindu, 12 Buddhist and 5 Jain caves.
